Short strolls to multi-day adventures

Victoria is compact, so you can reach many outstanding walks within a few hours of Melbourne. The state ranges from the granite headlands of Wilsons Promontory and the rugged sandstone of the Grampians to the high plains of the Victorian Alps and the cliffs of the Great Ocean Road.

Wilsons Promontory ("the Prom") is a perennial favourite. The Mount Oberon summit walk is a short climb with panoramic views. The coastal walks to Squeaky Beach and Tidal Overlook are family-friendly, and the Southern Circuit is a classic 3–5 day overnight hike that needs a permit and campsite bookings.

In the Grampians (Gariwerd), the walk to the Pinnacle and the 10 km Wonderland Loop are popular day options (check Parks Victoria for the current status of the Venus Baths section). The Grampians Peaks Trail, 164 km from Mount Zero to Dunkeld, is one of Australia's newest long-distance walks, with purpose-built hike-in campsites.

The Great Ocean Walk (about 110 km) follows the coast from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles, past Cape Otway Lightstation and remote beaches. Closer to Melbourne, the Two Bays Walking Track crosses the Mornington Peninsula from Dromana to Cape Schanck.

In the high country, Mount Feathertop via the Razorback is a classic alpine ridge walk, and Mount Buffalo has granite tors and gorge walks. For experienced walkers, the Cathedral Range offers rocky scrambles with big views.

Parks Victoria manages most of the state's parks. Day entry is generally free, while camping needs bookings and fees at most sites. Alpine areas see snow in winter, and weather can change quickly in any season.

The best seasons are spring and autumn for most areas, and summer for the Alps. Fire danger can be high in summer, and some parks close on severe days.

How to use this page. Each Victoria listing below shows the official track grade (AWTGS), distance, typical walking time, elevation gain, access and parking notes, fees or permits, the best season, whether dogs are allowed, and the facilities at the trailhead. Use the filters to narrow by region, time available or difficulty. You can also add walks to your favourites or compare up to three side by side. Every fact links back to the managing park agency, so you can check current conditions. If you know a well-loved Victoria walk we've missed, or spot an out-of-date detail, tell us through the Contact page and we'll check it against the official source before updating. New to hiking?
