Cape to Cape Track

The Cape to Cape Track runs 130 km (DBCA figure) along the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge in Western Australia's south-west, from Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse near Dunsborough to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse near Augusta. Most walkers take 5–7 days, and the walk passes through Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

Route. The northern sections follow limestone clifftops with views over the Indian Ocean and whale-watching from about June to November. Further south the track drops onto long beaches such as Contos and the Deepdene beach section, and winds through karri forest at Boranup. You also pass surf breaks, river mouths (Margaret River, Ellensbrook) and the Margaret River wine region, so there's plenty of accommodation off the track.

Campsites. Four free walk-in campsites and several national park campgrounds (paid) are spaced along the route. Many walkers mix camping with nights in nearby towns using shuttle services.

Grade. AWTGS Grade 4. Long beach sections in soft sand, rock hopping around headlands and river crossings make it harder than the gentle profile suggests. Some river mouths can only be crossed at low tide or in summer, so check before you go.

Tips. Carry water: there are tanks at campsites, but supply isn't guaranteed. The track is exposed, so sun and wind protection are essential.

Best season. Spring (September to November) for wildflowers and autumn for calm weather. Summer can be hot.

Who it suits. Experienced day walkers can tackle single sections, such as Cape Naturaliste to Sugarloaf Rock, or Prevelly to Redgate. Fit hikers wanting a coastal multi-day walk with comfortable town options at night will enjoy the full track. Wildflowers, caves (Lake Cave, Mammoth Cave) and lighthouse visits add variety. The Wadandi people are the Traditional Owners of this coast, and interpretive signs along the route share some of their stories. Snakes are active in warmer months, so stay on the track and watch your step in the long grass behind the dunes.
